Jelena Jankovic Defeats Sam Stosur

Sam Stosur will be in the WTA top ten on Monday regardless of her result against Jankovic. After playing on 2 other occassions, with Jankovic not dropping a set in any of their previous meetings, Sam tried to come out and play aggressively, winning her opening service game to love. She tried to continue playing on Jankovic's serve but instead threw in some early errors allowing Jankovic to hold relatively easily and allowing the Serbian a break point of Stosur's following service game.

Throughout the match multiple break points were saved by Sam's dominant serve with Jankovic later saying "She's serving bombs." Even with the bombs, after struggling to win consecutive points Jankovic took the break in the 5th game and a 3-2 lead after 13 minutes and 24 points.

In the next game Stosur got to a 0-30 scoreline and kept shaking her racket arm as if she was trying to keep it loose after getting tight in the game before. But she wasn't able to break back, instead Jelena barely put in any effort to hold, just letting Sam implode on her own. Sam's 20th unforced error brought up triple break point for the Serbian for a 5-2 lead, and this time Sam was only able to save two with her giant serve.

At the break between sets Stosur called for the trainer, having her neck and right arm assessed but not receiving a medical time out.

It didn't get much better. With a double fault Sam surrendered her opening game, Jankovic's 6th consecutive game, before breaking back immediately. Another double fault in the 5th game brought up double match point, only one of which she needed, going to a 3-2 lead.

After stretching her glutes on every change of ends, the trainer was called again, and again didn't actually treat the player, instead handing Jankovic a glove to rub some cream into her own leg.

Ultimately Sam Stosur's game failed her the same way Andy Murray's failed him against Robin Soderling. Jankovic needed just one match point and a wayward forehand from Stosur to secure the match, and a spot in the finals, 6-2, 6-4.
