Sam Stosur had been a favourite since surviving the ‘quarter of death’ which included taking down Justine Henin and Serena Williams before the semis. However, Stosur’s opponent, also a first time finalist, was the plucky Italian Francesca Schiavone who had been the underdog in some of her matches and had grunted her way to victory.
It got off to a subdued start with both players holding relatively easily as they tried to find their way in front of a huge crowd on this career changing day. Sam’s opening two service games were a beautiful display of power and accuracy with her serve and forehand, winning both games to love. Suddenly Schiavone decided to take on Stosurs serve and found her way to 0-30.
After Stosur thumped her way out of trouble Francesca responded by trying to charge the net to take control of the points and end them before Stosur got her forehand on the ball. In the ninth game Schiavone started charging the net and worked her way triple break point….
