I think it’s fair to say that women’s tennis has become both more interesting and more bizarre over the last 12 months. The return of Justine and Kim, the dramas with Serena all add to the fans interest, media coverage and improvement in the reputation of the often criticized WTA.
One area that has always been watched in women’s tennis is the fashion, and the girls have kicked it into high gear the last 12 months.
Bethanie Mattek-Sands has certainly burst into the spotlight, not only for her skills as a player but also because of her strange outfits that make her look more like a wannabe hockey player than a tennis player. Even in the harsh Australian heat Mattek-Sands wears knee high socks. At this years Hopman Cup the American has blasted her way through opponents but has also created a stir with her black hockey like ensemble and her huge tattoo on her inner arm.
The Williams sisters never help the fashion situation but this year Venus debuted some interesting choices such as the see through lace Moulin Rouge type outfit that looked more like underwear at Roland Garros. She also had the scary knickers that looked deceptively like there were no knickers, and the flouncy flapper outfit at Wimbledon. The problem is she appeared to spend so much time with her head in fashion that she forgot about winning.
Serena on the other hand, picked outfits that were more suitable and classy than ever before (think Wimbledon). Both sisters continue to wear huge pieces of jewelry on court.
The were of course some good moments such as Maria Sharapova at the US Open but there was also Aravane Rezai continuing to sport the metallic gold number that surely just made her too hot. Caroline Wozniacki’s yellow sports bra under a black dress wasn’t a high point but doesn’t really rate compared to some of the other shockers.
This year I think we have to award Venus and Bethanie as equal worst dressed and Maria Sharapova as best dressed.
