Juan Martin del Potro is continuing to move forward, passing Philipp Kohlscreiber 7-6, 7-6 for a place in the quarterfinal of Indian Wells. After Philipp tried to fight back from a set and a break deficit, del Potro then being forced to fight when Philipp took a 6-1 lead in the tie break.
Juan Martin’s return to form is impressive for many different reasons. Not only did he have surgery on his wrist last year, a wrist that appears to be pretty stable, but he barely played a handful of tournaments and yet he doesn’t appear to be match weary.
Sure his first two tournaments he looked a little more fatigued than you would expect but from there he’s just gone from strength to strength, winning Delray Beach recently and consistently pushing top level players again.
It’s great to see JMDP back on the courts – I missed him .
Juan Martin will now play Tommy Robredo for a spot in the semis after the Spaniard beat Sam Querrey 6-1, 6-3.
“I think it’s not normal, coming back 6-1 down in tie-breaks, but I got lucky and I took my opportunities, especially on my (second) match point with my serve. I say, try to make an ace; I did. Now I’m glad to go through to take the chance to play the quarter-finals here in this Masters.
It’s good for my future, too.” – JMDP
“I think I was playing great. Sam, he was not having his best day because he wasn’t putting a lot of first serves. And also when the point was going long, it was always for me, no? I have to say that I planned the match perfectly, and I think I played a great match.” – Tommy Robredo
