Just prior to Indian Well, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka (replacing Serena Williams) participated in Nike’s Clash of the Champions in Oregon. With thirty Grand Slam titles between them, Azarenka the only player without one, were raising money for their individual charities.
“I don’t think anyone else could’ve gotten us here a matter of a few days before Indian Wells is starting,” Maria Sharapova said before the event. The fans certainly appreciated the effort of the top players, Federer feeling more than welcome. “Walking down those stairs and hearing the crowd, you would think it is normal but it is not normal for us.”
Azarenka beat Sharapova in the women’s singles set while Rafa beat Roger in the men’s singles. With a John McEnroe debut in the double, Federer and Sharapova took the doubles.
