Spain Make Smooth Progress To Quarterfinals With Verdasco-Lopez Doubles Win

The last ditch fight by Belgian pair Olivier Rochus and Steve Darcis was strong but the doubles pairing of best friends Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco ultimately proved too strong. The Spanish duos 7-6, 6-4, 6-3 win gave Spain an unbeatable 3-0 lead and a position in the quarterfinals where they will play the winner of USA V Chile.

In a match that suffered a 'lights out' moment when some of the stadium lights stopped working, Verdasco and Lopez proved to be the more experienced pair under the pressure of Davis Cup, going in for the kill whenever the opportunity presented itself.

“I was out there with one of my best friends. We have known each other since we were six or seven years old, so to be here on the Saturday – against the best team, and with nothing to lose – it was fantastic.

For about ten minutes in the third set we were playing some amazing shots. We were having a lot of fun, but it’s still tough to lose in straight sets.” - Olivier Rochus

“It was close. We struggled a little bit in the first set, before playing a very good tiebreak. We played a bit better in the second set, and then obviously the third set, but they played an unbelievable game at 4-0.” - Fernando Verdasco
