After spending his career making, breaking or equaling records Rafael Nadal has now joined an elite group of players with more 500 or more career wins after his 6-3, 6-2 win over Ivan Dodig in the Barcelona semi finals. Nadal, who arrived in Barcelona looking to gain some extra points to try and secure his number one ranking, is now on the hunt for his sixth Barcelona title. Prior to last year, which he missed due to injury, Nadal had won five consecutive titles at the Barcelona club.
Nadal, who is the second youngest player to reach a career milestone of 500 victories, enjoyed a cake after his press conference.
Nadal has admitted he’s still far from his clay court best but hopes to improve and continue winning with 4,000 more points to defend on clay in the coming weeks. “Maybe I didn’t play my best tennis today but I’m very happy to be through to another final here in Barcelona. I expect a very difficult match tomorrow. David will play aggressively, with high intensity as always. He makes you play every point and I will have to play great tennis to win.”
The world number one talked to the press about his amazing career thus far and the fact that he’s managed to secure 500 wins at such a young age.
“(Five hundred wins) sounds a lot. My career to date has been much better than I could ever have dreamed of. I’m very grateful to all the people who have helped me to have the life I have, I’m very fortunate. I want to continue enjoying it because you never know when it might end.”
