irginie Razzano has won hearts and respect around the world simply by walking on centre court in Paris to play her first round match against Jarmila Gajdosova. Razzano’s fiance and former coach Stephan Vidal died just 8 days ago (May 16) at age 32 after a nine year battle with a brain tumour.
Wearing her heart on her sleeve and a black ribbon on her shirt Razzano was beaten by Australian Gajdosova, who incidentally has recently announced her divorce from Sam Groth, 6-3, 6-1 on Court Philippe Chatrier.
Razzano was given a standing ovation for her mammoth effort.
Razzano’s participation in Roland Garros was one of Stephane’s final requests.
“
I felt a lot of emotion, a lot of pain on court today. The pain is permanent within me. It’s very hard. But it felt good to be surrounded by so many people and to be here.
I tried to pay tribute to Stephane today. It was almost a ‘mission impossible,’ but I did my best.”
Razzano will play doubles with Alize Cornet.
As far as I’m aware Razzano has now announced if there is a charity or foundation she would appreciate donations to be made if people feel so inclined. When and if there is an announcement made Tennis Perspective will post it.
In the meantime please consider great charities like the ones below or some charities from your country.
As someone who’s been dealing with cancer for the last two years I can tell you there’s never too much research or support for cancer patients.
