In a totally bizarre third set Christina McHale had a 5-0 only to lose the set and the match 9-7 to Sara Errani, after two hours and 51 minutes. Christina said later she paniced… How you can panic when you’re that far ahead I don’t know.
Choke… there I said it.
“I started rushing when she won a couple of games and I felt like it was slipping away and I couldn’t stop it. I just panicked and didn’t take my time. I was feeling something in my leg and I wanted to close it out quickly and I stopped thinking and I was just trying to end it. I’m not stunned because I know anything can happen in tennis. But I’m upset and disappointed in myself.”
- Gael Monfils showed again why he’s so unpredictable and so often ends up wasting energy. In a match against Bjorn Phau that should have been straight forward, the Frenchman somehow got himself into trouble and fell behind 4-6 quickly.
Gael recovered to win the second set 6-3. At the time of writing Gael had battled hard to win the third set 7-5.
If I was Roger Rasheed I’d quit. I couldn’t take it. Sometimes Gael wants to win and then ten minutes later he’s changed his mind, or eaten cheese… I can’t keep up.
- Tomas Berdych also seemed to have a bit of a brain dead moment after he comfortably took the first two sets 6-3, 6-3 over Stephane Robert before
dropping the next two just as easily 2-6, 2-6.
Berdych saved a lot of break points to go ahead 3-2 and then broke for a 4-2 lead before handing the break straight back. After almost three and a half hours Robert took the match 9-7 in the fifth.
With over 100 ranking places separating the two players you’d expect a little more from Berydch.
Choke… There I said it again… Although full points to Robert for hanging tough and not backing down.
Novak Djokovic must be in his hotel delighted that a big name has fallen in his quarter so early.
