The Williams sisters have made a triumphant return to tennis. Despite the fact that Serena lost her second round match at Eastbourne today she was positive about the result, especially given she took world number two Vera Zvonareva to three sets.
Serena and Vera battled for over three hours and despite eventually losing the 3-6, 7-6, 7-5 match and took away some positives from the match and improved her form significantly since her first round match against Pironkova. Serena was leading 6-3, 5-3 before Zvonareva battle back. Williams then fell behind 5-2 in the third before showing her fighting spirit to get back in the match.
Interestingly because of Wimbledon’s seeding system Serena will be seeded number seven despite not playing for almost a year.
Venus beat eighth seed Andrea Petkovic in her first round match which was also her first match in nearly five months after suffering a psoas injury at the Australian Open.
Venus has gone on to beat Ana Ivanovic in just 62 minutes winning 6-3, 6-2.
“I was very happy to have those clean service games and not a lot of errors. I thought she played really well. When she had a chance to strike the ball she hit the corners. I felt good to be able to get on top of her today. I feel I’m playing well on the big points – these matches have been crucial for me to get back in the swing of things – literally in the swing of things.” – Venus Williams
“It was a good two matches for me. I couldn’t be happier with the amount of tennis I’ve played – it’s good. I definitely think I can do better, but that’s what’s so comforting, is I know I can do so much better and improve, and I’m so close to being there. One or two points and I could have won the match. That’s just me not playing, not even holding a racquet for over eight months, then finally picking one up and being able to do that.” – Serena Williams
