Petra Kvitova has powered past former Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova to win her maiden Grand Slam title after an incredible year. Kvitova beat Maria 6-3, 6-4 comfortably displaying her power and composure as her idol Martina Navratilova looked on. By winning Kvitova has now won a title on every surface this year.
Sharapova tried to take advantage of a slightly nervy start by Kvitova, electing to return first and breaking in the process. The flat powerful strokes of Kvitova seemed to trouble Sharapova early as she failed to control the shot and Petra immediately broke.
Two double faults from Sharapova gave Petra a 4-2 lead before the Russian was again forced to fight off break points and a set point at 2-5. Overpowering her opponent, Petra comfortably and confidently served the first set out 6-3.
The power of Kvitova forced Sharapova to try and find the lines and the more she went for the more she missed, being broken again in the opening game of the second set. The harder Sharapova pressed the less margin for error she had, desperate to make something happen. With a perfectly measure lob Maria hustled her way back into the second set at level at 2-2 much to the delight of her fiance Sasha Vujacic.
Sharapova battled in vain to try and hold in the fifth game but the huge Kvitova forehand, hit hard and flat anywhere on the court, continually trouble Maria and again she was broken as she failed to penetrate the court with her first serve. Always mentally tough, Maria valiantly fought back as some tight errors from Petra gave her the opportunity to break back again to level at 3-3. Again Sharapova failed to back it up with a break, Kvitova seemingly having Sharapova’s number.
With a strong service game Petra was just one game away from a Wimbledon title in straight sets. Under the pressure of holding to stay in the championship Sharapova held to love as her fiance continued to celebrate her efforts.
Without flinching Petra Kvitova served for the Wimbledon title to love, sealing it with an ace.
