Venus Williams Withdraws With Auto-immune Disease Sjögren’s Syndrome

In a day of surprises at Flushing Meadows the biggest came from the announcement that Venus Williams was withdrawing from her second round match against Sabine Lisicki with an unspecified illness. Later Venus released a statement saying she had recently been diagnosed with Sjögren’s Syndrome which explains some of her recent illness issues.

“I’m really disappointed to have to withdraw from this year’s U.S. Open. I have been recently diagnosed with Sjögren’s Syndrome, an autoimmune disease which is an ongoing medical condition that affects my energy level and causes fatigue and joint pain.

I enjoyed playing my first match here and wish I could continue but right now I am unable to. I am thankful I finally have a diagnosis and am now focused on getting better and returning to the court soon.”

Venus had arrived and prepared for the match before making her announcement and leaving the facility at 4.40pm.

It’s hard to imagine that with the implications of this disease that Venus will play again this season.

We wish her all the best with her treatment.
