Sam Stosur has won her first Grand Slam title today beating Serena Williams in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 in one hour and 13 minutes. It has been 10 years since Lleyton Hewitt lifted the US Open trophy and 31 years since Australia had a female Grand Slam singles champion.
Stosur played a brilliant match and played some of her best ever tennis while Williams struggled to steady the ship and berated the umpire in a manner not too dissimilar from her implosion against Kim Clijsters in 2009.
It was Stosur’s first ever time on Arthur Ashe Stadium and she managed Williams’ outburst well and managed to ignore the heavily biased crowd. Williams, the far more experienced of the two at this level and on this stage, found herself unable to cope with the blinding assault of Stosur.
Many people, myself included, wondered if Sam’s nerves would get the better of her as the lack of significant titles to her name has always been because of the mental side of her game has been lacking. Perhaps Serena expected Sam to be overwhelmed and roll over and play dead and when Sam played some of the best tennis of her life, Serena simply didn’t know what to do.
