erena Williams has continued her unbeaten streak by beating Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 7-5, 6-1 and has reached the US Open semifinals without losing a set.
Their match was originally slated for last night, with tournament organisers hoping to squeeze the women’s matches into a rain break that never really came. When the players came on court last night they never got beyond the warm up.
For Serena it was a slight adjustment, after practicing on indoor courts to come out and play again in the sunlight, but she quickly made the necessary changes to run away with the second set and the match.
Williams now faces world number one Caroline Wozniacki who is seeking her first Grand Slam. Wozniacki is often critised in the press because despite her year round consistency she is yet to claim a Slam to ‘justify’ her position at the top of the women’s game. It will be interesting to see what Serena comes up with.
My pick: Serena in three sets.
