It‘s amazing what can happen to a player after they win their first Grand Slam. Novak Djokovic took a while to get going again, Ana Ivanovic completely lost her way, Petra Kvitova has struggled to maintain her level and it seems Li Na has totally lost confidence in her ability.
The latest defeat for Li came at the China Open where she was then accused of cashing in on her French Open win to the point of not committing to her tennis sufficiently. Li was crushed in the first round by Romanian qualifier Monica Niculescu 6-4, 6-0
Li, who is back to using her husband as her full time coach, said “I’ve just lost all confidence now. I don’t know what I can do. Even winning one point is tough for me. For me it seems like the end of the season right now. I need a long break — for the body and the mind.”
“China is special. This is the biggest tournament in China. Of course I wanted to do well. But sometimes if I really want to do well, I put more pressure on myself. It’s not only the pressure I give myself; it’s also from outside.”
