After Bethanie Mattek-Sands secured a win for USA at the Hopman Cup, Mardy Fish hoped to come out and beat youngster Grigor Dimitrov for a 2-0 lead over Bulgaria so they wouldn’t have to play the doubles.
While Mattek-Sands headed to the showers and the massage table her husband Justin Sands was sent in search of a new outfit as it became increasingly evident that the doubles match would be played.
From the physio room we joked that the doubles would be war when we saw how irritated Fish was when he came off the court after his singles, seemingly scolding Dimitrov as they shook hands at the end of the match. Read more
You would expect with the restrictions on outfits at Wimbledon that the players couldn’t really go wrong with their fashion choices…. You’d be wrong.
This year there have been some shockers so lets take a look at some of the worst. Read more
Once again Bethanie Mattek Sands has received attention for the wrong reasons, – and not just because her first round opponent Misaki Doi beat her 4-6, 7-5, 5-7. Mattek Sands debuted another ridiculous tennis ball-based outfit while again wearing the war stripes as she did at Roland Garros. Read more
We knew Bethanie Mattek-Sands was planning some sort of tennis ball meets Lady Gaga inspired dress but we weren’t sure when it was going to appear. Bethanie has stunned, and not in a good way, the tennis community at the pre-Wimbledon party overnight. The American recently played at Roland Garros with war stripes painted under her eyes.
Other more fashion friendly players such as Maria Sharapova looked fabulous on the night. Meanwhile Serena Williams’ appearance at the players party fueled speculation that the American superstar has undergone plastic surgery during her year long injury time out.
Jelena Jankovic and Ana Ivanovic may have looked better, and Vania King and Yaroslava Shvedova may have had the most horrendous tan lines on display, but Mattek-Sands was definitely the undisputed worst dressed for the evening (and probably forever) Read more

>The absolute highlight of the Hopman Cup has to be when Nicolas Mahut, a history making man, stood with John Isner and Bethanie Mattek-Sands on the opposite side of the court. In 2010 Nicolas Mahut and John Isner stepped onto an outside court at Wimbledon where they did battle for 11 hours and 5 minutes in what became the longest match in the history of tennis.
While their Hopman Cup meetings were slightly shorter, their meeting for the mixed doubles kept the crowd entertained as the Frenchman borrowed a dress from partner Kristina Mladenovic and donned a headband and some of Bethanie Mattek-Sands’ long socks.
As you can see from the video bellow everyone was entertained by his display.
Bethanie Mattek-Sands and John Isner have beaten the Bel gium team of Justine Henin and Ruben Bemelmans after the Americans won the doubles tie 6-1, 6-3. Mattek-Sands pushed Henin to 7-6, 6-3 and then John Isner replied with a 6-3 6-4 win over Bemelmans with 13 aces, and countless other huge serves to his name.
Bethanie was delighted to take home the diamond encrusted tennis ball trophy. ”It’s been an amazing week. It’s my first time in Perth and I’ve really enjoyed myself. It’s funny, I saw this actually when I first got here and I thought it was the best trophy in sports.” Read more
I think it’s fair to say that women’s tennis has become both more interesting and more bizarre over the last 12 months. The return of Justine and Kim, the dramas with Serena all add to the fans interest, media coverage and improvement in the reputation of the often criticized WTA. Read more
