Piping Hot: Who Are Some Of The Hottest ATP & WTA Players?

It’s no secret that there is an “eye candy” component to tennis as a sport. By that we mean that there are plenty of players that even non-fans of the actual game will tune in to check out.

Often the players at the very top of the game are making huge sums of money but those lower down, even in the top thirty, can struggle to make ends meet by the time they’ve paid coaches and trainers as well as covering travel and accommodation costs. There are a huge number of lower ranked players who make most of their money through sponsorship/appearance deals of various kinds. Read more »

Serena Williams Out Of Brisbane After Ankle Spain

The slow motion replay of Serena Williams rolling her left ankle at the Brisbane International today is not pretty. The sprain has forced Williams to withdraw from her quarter-final with Daniela Hantuchova.

Later, after hobbling to her media interviews, Serena said, ”I have been to hospital and it has been confirmed that I have a left ankle sprain that I probably shouldn’t play on. I’m going to take a couple of days off – not too many – and see how I feel. I’m still hopeful of playing the Australian Open.” Read more »

The Ova’s Take Over

Just out of curiosity I had a look at the WTA rankings today to have a look at how many players with ‘ova’ as the last three letters of their surname  were in the top 100. There were 19 – and that’s not even counting Barbora Zahlavova Strycova twice! That means almost one in every five players in the top 100 is an Ova!

Wozniacki Goes Home Without A Slam Again

Caroline Wozniacki will have to deal with criticism of her being number one in the world without having ever won a Grand Slam title for a little while longer after she was handily beaten 6-1, 6-3 by Daniela Hantuchova.

Hantuchova played a smart match and hit 15 winners in the first set. Embarrassingly Wozniacki did not hit a winner in the first set. Read more »

Try as I might I will never be able to pick a top ten that pleases everyone.

Over time we’ve had some pretty good looking tennis players to watch on our screen, both male and female. Sure in the 80′s there were some good looking players we may not have noticed because they had the fluffy hair, scary eyebrows and strange fashion sense but some things get better with age (think George  Clooney).

So here’s my top ten men and women of all time .

To all those out there like my mum who harbour a deep unending love for Stefan Edberg… I’m sorry. Read more »

Safina Notches Up A Win

Dinara Safina has beaten two time former Indian Wells champion Daniela Hantuchova 7-6, 6-4. While Safina continued to struggle with her altered service motion, a necessary change after two spinal stress fractures, she managed to overcome the eight double faults and not let her nerves get the better of her.

Both players struggled in the first set, each dropping serve three times, but it was Safina who managed to get the only break in the second set. Read more »

>Daniela Hantuchova Visits Children's Hospital

>

Daniela Hantuchova may have had to withdraw after an MRI revealed she has a tear in her Achilles tendon but she still found time to go to Brisbane’s Mater Children’s Hospital to visit some very sick kids.

Daniela was happy playing games and posing for photos with the kids and when asked if she had somewhere else to be said, “No, it’s completely fine, it can wait. This is far more important.”

Huntuchova is familiar with such charitable efforts having opened House of the Smile in Cambodia. “It is the biggest part of my foundation where I’ve got a house for kids – around 40 or 50 – who have the HIV virus and we’re treating them and supporting doctors by helping provide medications every year. It’s something I’d like to do more and I’m looking forward to helping out this year as much as I can.”

Money raised from Huntuchova’s calendar will go towards raining money for her foundation’s causes.

The Slovakian star has not yet decided if she will be fit to play the Australian Open.

>Venus Fights Back, Clijsters Pummels Azarenka

>

Venus Williams very nearly found herself following a large number of men’s seeds out the door after letting Daniela Hantuchova dominate early in their match. However, in true Williams style, Venus, in her strange red corset style dress, managed to claw her way back into the match, eventually winning 1-6, 7-6, 6-4.

It’s an unusual scoreline for anyone who’s seen Hantuchova play recently. Huntuchova, over the last 1-2 years has really lacked the fire power to do any real damage. Even Venus was surprised.

“I haven’t seen her play so well in a long time, she was really executing her game. Of course, I’d like to win in a more straightforward way, but when it counts and when times get tough, I always feel confident I’m going to find a way to win the point. When I hit it hard she got it back, when I hit it high she got it back. So, just a real testimony to how well she was playing today.”

Kim Clijsters also had a good day at the office at the so called 5th Slam smashing Victoria Azarenka 6-4, 6-0. Azarenka later said via Twitter “Really bad game for me today! I just wasn’t myself on the court! And I need to work harder! I’m gonna take a few days off and come back better.”

Judging by what the men and the women have been saying it sounds like a lot of them are struggling a bit mentally…. Should make for an interesting clay court season.

In other WTA results, a soggy Miami continued to be the playground for the big names to fall;
- Svetlana Kuznetsova was defeated by Marion Bartoli 6-3, 6-0.
- Defending champion Victoria Azarenka was defeated by Kim Clijsters 6-4, 6-0.
- Jelena Jankovic lost to Sam Stosur 6-1, 7-6.
- Vera Zvonareva lost to Justine Henin 6-1, 6-4, although that result is not so surprising.
