Mayer Sends Nadal Packing In Shanghai

Rafael Nadal has been bundled out of the Shanghai Masters in the third round by Florian Mayer. Mayer played an incredibly varied, intelligent game to throw the Spaniard off his game, winning 7-6, 6-3 in just an hour and 48 minutes.

Mayer credited his improved mental toughness for the win, but the truth is he played an incredible match. “I just am maybe a little bit fitter mentally and physically. Maybe that’s two per cent or three per cent more. I’m serving very well. Mix it up with serve and volley.” Read more »

Murray Beats Mayer For Semi Spot

There’s something about Andy Murray that makes it hard for me to watch his matches. Sometimes he’s a brilliant shot maker and other times he’s a horribly moody, inconsistent player. Maybe it’s because of his Jekyll and Hyde style personality that I find I just can’t get behind him. It’s easier to watch Andy Murray than Angry Murray but I can’t trust that he wont morph into Angry before my eyes.

Today was one of those days. He came out against Florian Mayer as Angry Murray and was just wiped on the court in the first set, his mother, Judy, repeatedly being seen with crossed fingers before another opportunity went wasted. Read more »

>Del Potro Falls In Sydney

>

Juan Martin del Potro has failed to claim a second win in Sydney, falling against Florian Mayer 6-2, 7-5. Lack of match practice, and match fitness was quite clearly a contributing factor in the match as the Argentine continued to produce the huge serves he is known for.

On a positive note, the former top five player declared himself pain free.

“You could see he’s not 100 per cent. His serve is really strong, but from the baseline he missed a lot.  I think also he was maybe a little bit tired from his long match Monday because when you didn’t play for such a long time and you play your first match over three hours, it’s really tough. But I really played well from the baseline. I knew when I played my game I had a good chance to win today, and I took it.” – Florian Mayer

“Of course I want to play and win a tournament. When you lose, it’s hard. But now it’s different.  I have different sensations. I lost, but I have another tournament in three days.  I’m in good shape.  I have my wrist in good shape. That’s good.

Last year was very bad year for me, and now I’m okay. I am in good shape … I lost, but I’m in the competition again. Everything is tough after long, long time. But if I’m here it’s because I want to play. I want to try again. That’s what I’m thinking every day. I don’t want to feel bad, you know.” – Juan Martin del Potro

>Juan Martin Del Potro Gets Off To A Fighting Start

>

Juan Martin del Potro has showed his fighting spirit is still alive and kicking as he took on Feliciano Lopez in the first round of Sydney’s Medibank International. You have to feel a bit sorry for Feliciano, he always seems to get hard first round opponents and almost gets the better of them but eventually goes home a first round loser, however, he did produce some beautiful serve and volley tennis.

Again today Lopez pushed del Potro all the way in their 3 hour and 20 minute match that saw three tie breaks, the Argentine eventually winning 6-7, 7-6, 7-6. Feliciano had one match point in the second set with a service point to try and close out the match in straight sets but when he didn’t go for the kill del Potro did and produced a cross court forehand winner.

Del Potro needed three set points to take the second set.

Lopez continued to push del Potro in the humidity, having six break point chances which he couldn’t convert. Both men produced some huge serves, particularly considering the improvements to Lopez’s serve – Lopez served 20 and del Potro served 21.

Juan Martin, who has struggled with a wrist injury which required surgery, has gone almost exactly a year without winning a match due to his extensive time out. He will now face Florian Mayer

“I don’t expect this kind of match for the start, but we played a beautiful match, very close. Feliciano is a fantastic player on this kind of surface, and I played good tennis again.  I feel good all on my match, and finally I won a match since one year.

I worked very hard for two months in Argentina. My coaches trust in my conditions and I trust in myself, so I’m ready again to play long matches. I am still lower with my level, I need time. I need work to keep going in this road. It’s a long road to be in the Top 10 again, but I’m ready to try. I need matches and matches, practice, and work. Maybe four, six months I’m ready to play again good tennis.” – Juan Martin del Potro

>Federer Claims 64th Title

>

Unsurprisingly Roger Federer has defeated Florian Mayer in the Stockholm final to collect his 64th title and third of this season. Federer beat Mayer 6-4, 6-3 on his way to the title which ties him in fourth place with Pete Sampras on the all time list.

It was a straight forward match for Federer, taking just 63 minutes to complete the match before shaing hands with Mayer and the umpire.

“It means the world to me to win this title. It’s always nice winning in a place like this with a tennis heritage and a lot of history. It’s amazing that I’m there where Pete’s ended his career on. You never know when it’s your last one. That’s why you want to savour every tournament victory.”

While talking to media Federer also spoke about his desire for a shorter season.

“It makes complete sense to finish the season a bit earlier,I’m not complaining personally. I don’t mind since I just take breaks during the season. But for the average player it’s smart to finish at some stage and have a proper off-season. We are speaking of cutting the calendar by a couple of weeks. I hope we can have some kind of compromise. We all want peace and harmony.”

>Federer To Face Mayer In Stockholm Finals

>

Roger Federer will face Florian Mayer in the finals of Stockholm after he beat Ivan Ljubicic in the semi finals 7-6, 6-2. Federer again struggled a bit in the first set, however appearing more steady than he did against Wawrinka, working his way back into the set as Ljubicic tried to serve it out.

After Federer forced, and won, the first set tie break before he fell behind again 1-2 in the second set. The former world number 1 managed to do what he has been so successful at over the year, change the momentum and dictate play. From 1-2 down he won five consecutive games, winning the match in just 77 minutes.

Surely Federer will be counting his lucky stars that world number 47 Florian Mayer will be his opponent in the finals. While Mayer has been having a great tournament, saving one match point to beat Jarkko Nieminen in three sets in his semi final, he will certainly have a difficult task ahead of him if he wants to take the title from Federer. Realistically it’s Federer’s title to lose.

It is not an impossible task though. Federer has been proven many times this year to be merely a man and not the unbeatable tennis God of years gone by. This season Federer has claimed a modest two titles; the Australian Open and the Cincinnati Masters.

If Federer wins it will be his 64th career title which will tie him with Pete Sampras for fourth position on the all time title record.

“I’d love to win, I’ve never won a title in Sweden, that would be something special. But it’s good to win one in any case. It’s a good feeling to walk off court as a winner. It would be nice a to win a third title, another would be great. I’ve had an amazing run in the past winning 24 straight finals. Maybe this can be the start of another streak… The confidence is obviously in my favour. But he has nothing to lose. He will come out aggressive. I’ve played him a few times and managed to beat him.”
