Schiavone Prepares For Title Defense

Francesca Schiavone has battled her way to her second consecutive French Open final and secured the chance to defend her only Grand Slam.

China’s Li Na, a peoples favourite from the Australian Open, has triumphed over Maria Sharapova in straight sets 6-4, 7-5 over night. Sharapova was looking to complete a career Grand Slam at the French Open and looked to be in the form to do so but the Russian’s game was hampered by the windy conditions in Paris. Read more »

Marion Bartoli has delighted French crowds by making the semifinals of her home tournament for the first time in her career after beating Svetlana Kuznetsova 7-6, 6-4. Bartoli now faces defending champion Francesca Schiavone for a place in the final. Read more »

Zvonareva Sent Packing In Paris

Vera Zvonareva should have beaten Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in two easy sets but as is often the case it didn’t work out so well for the often emotional Russian. Instead Pavlyuchenkova upset the highest seed left in the draw on the women’s side 7-6, 2-6, 6-2.

Vera, despite dropping serve early, quickly moved to a comfortable 5-2 position with a set point in hand before the wheels fell off. Pavlyuchenkova somehow managed to fight back and force a tiebreak and quickly found her way to a 4-1 advantage. Read more »

No Trouble For Schiavone

Francesca Schiavone has opened her defense of her only Grand Slam title by thumping American Melanie Oudin. The two players exchanged breaks early on in the first set before Schiavone simply pummeled her younger opponent. It took just 62 minutes for the Italian to be heading back into the locker room. Schiavone Pushed Passed Stosur, Italy Take 2-1 Lead

After two hours and 44 minutes Francesca Schiavone has given Italy a 2-1 lead against Australian after defeating Sam Stosur 7-6, 3-6, 7-5 in Hobart. Schiavone tried to use the same tactics that had helped her beat a nervous Sam at Roland Garros, but her charges to the net were not always successful. Read more »

Player Of The Month (January): Li Na

In January we were blessed with a lot of great candidates for player of the month. Novak Djokovic produced some incredible, near groin splitting, moments during the Australian Open as he slid around the court, defending like I’ve never seen him do before. Kim Clijsters cried as she became Aussie Kim. Francesca Schiavone and Svetlana Kuznetsova produced some truly incredible fighting spirit to battling to 16-14 in the third set.
