Zeballos Wins Maiden Title By Defeating Rafael Nadal

It took 2 hours and 46 minutes for Horacio Zeballos to claim his first ATP title beating the King of Clay Rafa Nadal 6-7, 7-6, 6-4. Zeballos put on a great show and refused to be intimidated by the record of Nadal, playing some incredibly points and being far more effective on serve than the Spaniard.

Zeballos became only the third man ever, behind Djokovic and Federer, to beat Nadal in a clay court final.

Zeballos was playing a huge tennis name and a clay court giant and yet the way Rafa was moving around the court made it feel like the great Spaniard was the underdog – the one legged underdog. Read more »

Horacio Zeballos Upsets David Nalbandian

In Santiago, Chile, Horacio Zeballos, ranked 108 in the world, has defeated world number 19 David Nalbandian. David may have made the finals of Auckland but he has had some disappointing results for a man of his experience and ranking. He failed to back up his first round five set epic against Lleyton Hewitt at the Australian Open with any really meaningful effort and he just fell away in the Auckland final. Read more »

>Rafa Nadal Hurries Into Third Round

>

After waiting a day for his match against Horacio Zeballos, Rafael Nadal was making no mistakes, taking a double break to easily take the first set 6-2. Nadal worked on being accurate more that powerful in the match, serving 75% of 1st serves in and allowing Zeballos a measly two points when he got his first serve in.

Zeballos showed good touch, playing numerous drop shots that not even the speedy Nadal could not chase down. In the third game some errors, including a poor attempt at a drop shot and a double fault, gave Zeballos his first break point chances, the first he missed to his audible irritation. Precision serving from Nadal against a fellow lefty got him out of trouble until a blistering forehand return winner found him under pressure again. Zeballos tried to pull an Ernests Gulbis again – throwing another drop shot into the conversation to try and convert the break. The drop shot sailed so high it was almost a lob, which Nadal dutifully punished.

The drop shot of Zeballos became increasingly obvious and Nadal was always there in time, breaking the Argentine for a 3-2 lead. An incredible cross court backhand return brought up triple set point for the Spaniard, two of which Zeballos managed to fight off but a wild backhand gave Nadal the second set 6-2, in 35 minutes, just a minute longer than the first set.

In the third set, Rafa raced to a 3-0 lead wearing his $525,000 watch that weighs a mere 20 grams. In the seventh game the Spaniard fended of more break points but eventually was broken for the first time but a persistent Zeballos to get things back on serve at 4-3. As has been the norm since the success of Ernests Gulbis in Rome, more drop shots were played by Zeballos, looking to get on the board again. So many drop shots have been played this year at Roland Garros that it is almost becoming predictable as a spectator, and, even Federer’s doing it. Even with the drop shot Zeballos couldn’t hold, allowing Nadal to break straight back and serve for the match.

Nadal still didn’t look as sharp as he did at the beginning of the clay court season, but he still appears to be in ominous form. After 1 hour and 45 minutes the world number two had booked a place in the third round with his 6–2, 6-2, 6-3 victory.

Nadal awaits the winner of Lleyton Hewitt and Denis Istomin.

Gianni Mina Puts Up A Fight As Nadal Claims Straight Sets Victory

Rafael Nadal has successfully made his 2010 debut at Roland Garros, interestingly not on the main show court Philippe Chatrier, being booted to the second show court so that Marion Bartoli could play to French crowds. On the slightly smaller second show court a packed crowd gathered to watch a French wildcard take on the King of Clay.  Nadal won 6-2, 6-2, 6-2. Read more »

>Argentina Win World Team Cup

>With the victory of Horacio Zebollas over America’s Robby Ginepri 6-4, 6-7, 7-5, Argentina took an unbeatable 2-0 lead after Juan Monaco defeated Sam Querrey. Zebollas was one point away from winning his match in straight sets before Ginepri forced a third set.

“I think my match was difficult, but also his match was incredible. He was fighting like an animal for, like, three hours. We are very happy because when we came here the goal was to win here for Argentina and we did it.” – Juan Monaco

>Seeds Fall In Rome: Baghdatis, Ferrero And Querrey Out.

>It was a bad day for the seeds in Rome today with Marcos Baghdatis, Sam Querrey and Juan Carlos Ferrero packing their bags and heading off towards Madrid to train and await the next Masters tournament.

Ernests Gulbis disposed of Baghdatis 6-2, 6-2 in just under 70 minutes in fairly simple fashion with Gulbis striking the ball cleanly and simply outplaying the Cypriot. Gulbis will face Roger Federer in the next round.

Querrey was scheduled to play Julien Benneteau who can play dangerous tennis if he’s in form, and in a first round encounter that could have gone either way, the Frenchman came out on top 7-6, 3-6, 7-6. Benneteau managed to win just 4 more points in total that his American opponent.

The biggest surprise (although I’ll admit I had a sneaky feeling he’d fall early but not this early) was the thrashing of Juan Carlos Ferrero by qualifies Santiago Giraldo who beat Ferrero with 32 winners compared to just 9 from Ferrero. Ferrero was thrashed so convincingly that the first set, which Giraldo won 6-0, took just 17 minutes to complete.

John Isner barely survived his 25th birthday clash with Horacio Zeballos, rallying back to win in three tight sets 4-6, 7-6, 7-5. Isner was aided by 20 aces.

>Nalbandian Helps Argentina Get Within One Point Of Victory

>The surprise appearances of David Nalbandian, essentially coming to the rescue, in the Davis Cup tie between Sweden and Argentina has proved timely, with the experienced baller helping clinch the all important doubles rubber. Nalbandian proved himself fit, after a recent adductor (inner thigh muscle) tear when playing his first tournament after hip surgery last year, and was named in the doubles team with Horacio Zeballos. The duo battled hard to beat the Swedes, Robin Soderling and Robert Lindstedt, 6-2, 7-6, 7-6, giving Argentina a 2-1 lead in the tie.

Nalbandian proved t be in fine form, holding every service game and showing the form that was reminicent of the Argentine in his prime, with beautiful touch at the net and deadly accuracy on serve. The form was particularly impressive given the fact that he has only played two professional matches since his hip surgery almost a year ago.

The loss is disappointing for the Swedes who were playing with the home court advantage, and with only a small, albeit noisy, Argentinian support group in the crowd. However, the rowdy group of Argentinians went crazy when their boys clinched match point, leading Zeballos to leap into the open arms of Nalbandian.

The win was the first for Nalbandian since he played the 2008 final, in Argentina, against Spain which Spain won, devastating Nalbandian who then refused to speak to media. So for him is was a sweet victory, a promising return to form and a boost in confidence that he needed.

“After nine months out it’s not easy to play well but I think I did well today, Horacio played a great match too. He was incredible. The key was starting really well. I tried to push him all the way and he never let me down. We took every chance they gave us.”

Also promising for Argentina is the possibility that Nalbandian will play a singles rubber despite not originally being named to play any of the rubbers. Captain Tito Vazquez said; “Definitely if he thinks he can play he’s definitely an asset for us and I think that we’ll put him in the team. Today he looked okay, good enough to play our No.2 singles.”

The pressure is now all on Robin Soderling to keep the Swedes alive in the first rubber in the reverse singles on Sunday.
