Novak Djokovic had to overcome Alex Dolgopolov and gusty conditions at Flushing Meadows to book his place in the US Open quarterfinals. Nole was also forced to take the first set in an epic tie break that ended at 16-14 after almost 30 minutes.
Dolgopolov had his chances to claim the tie break at 6-5 and 7-6 after taking an early lead in the tiebreak but the defenses of the Serbian world number one were too strong. Read more
Tomas Berdych has put on a blistering display in his second round US Open match against Fabio Fognini. Berdych crushed the Italian Stallion 7-5, 6-0, 6-0. Berdych’s first service percentage was an impressive 94% which essentially kept Fognini out of the last two sets much to his frustration.

Mardy Fish wanted to use the tournaments leading up to the US Open to try and comfortably secure himself a position in the top ten rankings and he has done so by securing a finals position after defeating Janko Tipsarevic 6-3, 6-4 in the Rogers Cup semi final. The bad news for Fish is that his opponent is Novak Djokovic – a man who has lost one match all season and is looking to become the first man to win five Masters 1000 titles in a year. Read more
John Isner and Gael Monfils will face off in the semifinals in Washington for a chance to face the winner of Donald Young V Radek Stepanek. Monfils took Janko Tipsarevic 6-4, 6-4 while mighty John Isner needed three sets to pass Viktor Troicki 7-6, 3-6, 6-1. Read more
The comeback of James Blake seems to be gathering speed as the American finds his form on his home courts after difficulties with tendinitis of his patella tendons (knees). In Washington, Blake put on a stellar performance before the big serving giant John Isner finally won 7-6, 1-6, 7-6 for a place in the quarterfinals.
Isner will now play Viktor Troicki for a chance to face the winner of Tipsarevic V Monfils for a place in the finals. Read more
Given the recent form of some of the higher ranked players (Berdych I’m looking at you here) and the significant number of highly ranked fatigued (Djokovic, Federer, Nadal) and injured players (Simon, Fish) looking at the first round match ups took longer than it normally does. Recently players like Ivan Dodig, Andreas Seppi, Philipp Kohlschreiber and Janko Tipsarevic have stepped up and played some great tennis on grass and should make for an interesting Wimbledon. Novak Djokovic extended his unbeaten 2011 streak to 26 matches by beating Blaz Kavcic 6-3, 6-2 in his tournament in Begrade for a place in Saturday’s semi final against good friend Janko Tipsarevic.
Novak, who doesn’t have many points to defend and has a real chance at becoming world number one in the coming weeks, also received the highest honour bestowed by the Serbian Orthodox church. He received the Order of Saint Sava of the first degree Thursday. Read more
