The Ova’s Take Over

Just out of curiosity I had a look at the WTA rankings today to have a look at how many players with ‘ova’ as the last three letters of their surname  were in the top 100. There were 19 – and that’s not even counting Barbora Zahlavova Strycova twice! That means almost one in every five players in the top 100 is an Ova!

>Kim Clijsters Seals Her Position Among Legends

>

Kim Clijsters has sealed her position amongst some of the greatest players on the WTA tour after claiming her third season ending championship title in Doha overnight. Clijsters endured a car crash before her semi final match and then stepped up to defeat Caroline Wozniacki the following day 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 in the finals.

Clijsters has previously won the championship in 2002 and 2003. Only Martina Navratilova (8), Steffi Graf (5) and Chris Evert (4) have won more tour championships. Kim is tied with Monica Seles with three titles.

It was a disappointing loss for new world number 1 Wozniacki who could have used a seventh title to help declare her as the rightful owner of the position, rather than the benefactor of Serena William’s injury. While Wozniacki has won more titles than any of the other women on tour, Clijsters has five titles to Caroline’s six, the Dane is yet to break through and claim a Grand Slam, whereas Kim successfully defended her US Open title a few weeks ago.

Clijsters had been ahead 4-1 in the second set and was showing up areas of weakness in Wozniacki’s game, before she had a mid match lapse in concentration which the Dane took advantage of.

“When we started the third set, I said: ‘Okay, this is going to be the last set of the year, give yourself 200 per cent and we’ll see how it ends. But it was a very tough match. I was able to turn it around and just really focus on getting my game back that made me lead in that match until halfway through that second set.”

WAG’s Of Tennis

Who are the most famous, or infamous, WAG’s in tennis? Read on and have your say.

Mirka Federer

At the top of the list has to be Roger Federer’s wife, and former player, Mirka Federer. Mirka and Roger met and started dating at the Sydney 2000 Olympic games. Mirka’s highest ranking was 76 with less than $300,000 in prize money, a measily amount compared to her husbands fortune, which exceeds $50 million in prize money alone. However, Mirka has long been acknowledged to be the force behind Federer, previously organising some of his media and public relations commitments, assisting him in practice and encouraging him to continue playing – even a few days after their wedding. >

Martina Navratilova has warned women around the about being vigilant about getting regular cancer check ups including mamograms saying she’d let it slip, and that it had being 4 years since her last one. Martina has the more agressive (level 3) DCIS tumor cell type and as a result will have 6 weeks of radiation treatment in Paris where she hopes to also commentate for the Roland Garros tournament if she’s able.

She also discussed the issue as part of her role in health promotion on http://www.aarp.org/ws/MartinaChat/ you can see some of it below.

Dr. Julie Silver:

Radiation therapy often causes intense fatigue. Exercise is one of the best ways to combat this. Also, try cognitive behavioral therapies such as meditation.

Has your tennis game been affected because of the surgery?

1:10
Martina Navratilova:

Yes. Because I had one of my lymph nodes taken out under left arm pit which was the more painful recovery part of the surgery and because of the protruding lump that has now gotten smaller I couldn’t play tennis for three weeks. I was skiing, playing hockey, biking but no tennis.

Dr. Julie Silver:

Many women with breast cancer have arm and shoulder problems that can be helped with cancer rehabilitation.

Martina Navratilova:

Chris – thank you so much -I love that hug. My tennis friend Jim Courier sent me a sweet email yesterday saying he felt sorry for the Cancer because I was going to kick its ass. I said thank you so much Jim. Don’t feel sorry for the Cancer –but yes I will kick its ass.
