It’s no secret that there is an “eye candy” component to tennis as a sport. By that we mean that there are plenty of players that even non-fans of the actual game will tune in to check out.
Often the players at the very top of the game are making huge sums of money but those lower down, even in the top thirty, can struggle to make ends meet by the time they’ve paid coaches and trainers as well as covering travel and accommodation costs. Vera Zvonareva has gone nude for ESPN the magazine “The Body Issue”. It’s interesting because Zvonareva is a gorgeous girl with amazing eyes and a great body but this photo is… well, not flattering.

Ana Ivanovic has beaten an injured Peng Shuai 6-4, 6-2 after an hour and seventeen minutes of play in Carlsbad, Peng unable to combat the attack of Ivanovic. Ivanovic has been returning to the top of the women’s game as she works her way to better form.
In the semifinal Ivanovic will face Vera Zvonareva who beat Sabine Lisicki 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 despite six double faults and a slow start. “I think I started off a little slow but then I think I picked it up and it was a little bit better, a little bit cleaner than the previous one.”
Retired tennis player Elena Dementieva is a step closer to having the family she talked about when she retired. On July 16 Elena married hockey champion Maxim Afinogenov at the Ritz Carlton in Moscow.
The ceremony was held on the roof of the building and birds were released at the end of the ceremony. The reception, inside the Ritz, hosted such famous tennis players as Vera Zvonareva, Dinara Safina, Sveta Kuznetsova, Maria Kirilenko and her partner Igor Andreev. Vera Dushevina caught the bouquet while Elena Vesnina and Ekaterina Makarova looked on. Read more

The Williams sisters have made a triumphant return to tennis. Despite the fact that Serena lost her second round match at Eastbourne today she was positive about the result, especially given she took world number two Vera Zvonareva to three sets. Read more
Vera Zvonareva should have beaten Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in two easy sets but as is often the case it didn’t work out so well for the often emotional Russian. Instead Pavlyuchenkova upset the highest seed left in the draw on the women’s side 7-6, 2-6, 6-2.
Vera, despite dropping serve early, quickly moved to a comfortable 5-2 position with a set point in hand before the wheels fell off. Pavlyuchenkova somehow managed to fight back and force a tiebreak and quickly found her way to a 4-1 advantage. Read more
Last years runner up Samantha Stosur has been knocked out in the third round of Roland Garros by world number 51 Gisela Dulko. Argentine Duko has scalped the odd big name from time to time but has had the most success in doubles, winning this years women’s doubles at the Australian Open.
